TAMIL VOWELS
First let us be familiar with the Tamil Vowels which is called
Uyir Ezhuthukkal [உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள்]. Uyir means Soul and Ezhuthukkal means letters. They are 12 in numbers. 5 are short vowels called Kuril [குறில்] and 7 long vowels called Nedil [நெடில்]
The twelve Soul letters are:
அ, ஆ, இ, ஈ, உ, ஊ, எ, ஏ, ஐ, ஒ, ஓ, ஔ
அ - a as in another
ஆ - ā as in all
இ - i as in in
ஈ - ī as in bee
உ - u as in book
ஊ - ū as in pool
எ - e as in enter
ஏ - ē as in ate
ஐ - ai as in life
ஒ - o as in one
ஓ - ō as in dog
ஒள - ou as in flour
There are five short vowels (குறில்) namely, அ, இ, உ, எ and ஒ. The time taken to say one short vowel would be equal to one blink of an eye called maththirai (மாத்திரை) in Tamil.
There are seven long vowels (நெடில்) which are ஆ, ஈ, ஊ, ஏ, ஐ, ஓ and ஔ. The time taken to say one long vowel would be equal to two blinks of an eye.
Sometimes ஐ (a + i) and ஔ (a + au) are called diphthongs as they are a combination of two vowels. While making these sounds, the tongue moves from the position of the first vowel to the other. In spoken Tamil, however, these two diphthongs are produced with the combination of vowel and corresponding glides namely y (ய்) and v(வ்) respectively, as in அய் and அவ்.
There is an extra letter called Aayitha Ezhuthu which looks like the dots on the shield and is denoted by ∴
It is neither a vowel nor a consonant. It is not frequently used. It softens the hard consonant following it.

ORIGIN OF SOUNDS

The Origin of Sounds Tolkāppiyam deals with the grammar of Tamil language. The third chapter piRappiyal (பிறப்பியல்) explains about pronunciation methods of the phonemes. The rising air starting from the navel finds place in the chest, larynx, pharynx and touches the teeth, lips, tongue, nose and palate. These eight organs produce all the letters which are born in different ways which can be known in a distinct manner when we learn the cause of production of sounds.

- Chest (மார்பு mārbu)
- larynx (குரல்வளை kuralvaLai),
- pharynx (தொண்டை thoNdai)
- teeth (பல் pal), - lips (உதடு uthadu) tongue (நாக்கு nākku) position, - nose (மூக்கு Mūkku). and
- palate (அண்ணம் aNNam)

The origin of sound comes from four organs.
• Vowels(உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள்) and idayinam (இடயினம்) originates from larynx (குரல்வளை kuralvaLai).
• vallinam (வல்லினம்) comes from chest (மார்பு).
• mellinam(மெல்லினம்) comes from nose (மூக்கு Mūkku)
• Aayitha Ezhuthu (ஆய்த எழுத்து) comes from head (தலை thalai).

In the course of production, The twelve vowels are born by the air which finds place in the larynx.

Among the vowels, அ (a) ஆ(ā) are born because of the opening of the mouth.
இ(i), ஈ(ī), எ (e), ஏ(ē) and ஐ(ai) - - these five sounds are born in the same way; the sides of the tongue will touch the upper teeth.
உ(u), ஊ(ū), ஒ(o), ஓ(ō) and ஔ(au) – These five sounds are born because of the rounding of the lips.
The manner of producing each sound will differ a little.
