Tamil Grammar
Much of Tamil grammar is extensively described in the oldest available grammar book for Tamil, the Tolkāppiyam. Modern Tamil writing is largely based on the 13th century grammar Naṉṉūl which restated and clarified the rules of the Tolkāppiyam, with some modifications.
Tamil is an agglutinative language. Tamil words consist of a lexical root to which one or more affixes are attached.
Most Tamil affixes are suffixes. Tamil suffixes can be derivational suffixes, which either change the part of speech of the word or its meaning, or inflectional suffixes, which mark categories such as person, number, mood, tense, etc. There is no absolute limit on the length and extent of agglutination, which can lead to long words with a large number of suffixes, which would require several words or a sentence in English. To give an example, the word pōgamuḍiyādavargaḷukkāga (போகமுடியாதவர்களுக்காக) means "for the sake of those who cannot go", and consists of the following morphemes:
Words formed as a result of the agglutinative process are often difficult to translate. According to Today Translations, a
British translation service, the Tamil word "செல்லாதிருப்பவர்" (cellaathiruppavar, meaning a certain type of truancy - who does not go - is somewhat near in meaning ) is ranked 8th in The Most Untranslatable Word In The World list.
Word in Tamil is called சொல்.
Definition: One letter standing alone or two or more letters standing together and conveys meaning is regarded as a word (சொல்).
சொல் : ஓர் எழுத்து தனித்து நின்றோ இரண்டு முதலிய பல எழுத்துகள் தொடர்ந்து நின்றோ ஒரு பொருளைக் குறிப்பது சொல்லாகும்.
சொற்களின் அமைப்பு அடிப்படையில் அவையில் அவை பகாப்பதம், பகுபதம், என இரண்டு வகைப்படும்.
Based on the structure the word is divided into indivisible word (பகாப்பதம்) and divisible word (பகுபதம்)
பகாப்பதம்:பிரிக்க முடியாத, பிரித்தால் பொருள் தராத சொல் பகாப்பதம் ஆகும். The words which cannot be divided and if divided conveys no meaning are called indivisible word (பகாப்பதம்).
உதாரணம்:
மண் Soil_, விண் (sky), காற்று (air), நீர்(water) → பெயர்ப் பகாப்பதம்
நட(walk), வா(come), உண்(eat) → வினைப் பகாப்பதம்
மன், போல் மற்று → இடைப் பகாப்பதம் (words have no meaning when standing alone)
சால (great), உறு(Absolutely), தவ (intensely) → உரிப் பகாப்பதம்
பகுபதம்பிரிக்க முடிந்த, பிரித்தால் பொருள் தருகின்ற பதம் பகுபதம் ஆகும். பெயர்ப் பகுபதம் பொருள், இடம், காலம். சினை, குணம், தொழில், என்ற ஆறின் அடிப்படையில் வரும். அவை இரண்டு வகைப்படும் - பெயர்ப் பகுபதம் & வினைப் பகுபதம்
The divisible word is based on meaning, place, time, parts of the body, quality, and work. Only two types - divisible noun and divisible verb.
சொல் பதம் போலி மொழி என்பவை ஒரே பொருளைக் குறிக்கும் ஆயினும் அவைகளின் வகைகள் மாறுபடும்.

On the basis of grammar Tamil words are divided into four principal parts, viz. Nouns (பெயர்ச் சொல்), Verbs (வினைச்சொல்), Particles (இடைச்சொல்) and Adjectives (உரிச்சொல்). They have no Article; the Pronoun is included in the Noun, the Preposition, Conjunction, and Interjection in the Particles, and the Adverb in the Adjective.
