CONSONANTS
There are 18 consonants :
க் ங் ச் ஞ் ட் ண் த் ந் ப் ம் ய் ர் ல் வ் ழ் ள் ற் ன்
This sequence is nowadays followed in line with the Hindi letters. Originally the sequence followed according to the sounds which is more scientific. The 18 consonants are divided in to three divisions:
vallinam (வல்லினம்)
க் - k as in bucket
ச் - ch as in match
ட் - t as in pit
த் - th as in both
ப் - p as in pack
ற் - tr as in citric
mellinam (மெல்லினம்)
ங் - ṅ as in long
ஞ் - ng as in sygringe ; gyan
ண் - iN as in Cinderella
ந் - n as in panther
ம் - m as in plum
ன் - n as in sin
idayinam (இடயினம்)
ய் - y as in yak
ர் - r as in stir
ல் - l as in lamp
வ் - v as in victory
ழ் - (tongue retracted) like zh
ள் - l as in marble
The ‘pure’ consonants all have a dot over them. It is difficult to pronounce them. So we add consonants + vowel (அ) and at the end we say dot above (மேற்புள்ளி).
When we add vowel to consonants, it becomes உயிர்மெய்எழுத்துக்கள் (Uyir Mei Ezhuthukkal) or Soul body letters .for eg: க் + அ equals க which is Soul body letters. When vowels are added to such pure consonants to form syllables, this dot is removed and a secondary symbol representing the vowel is included except for the vowel (அ).
TOP OF PAGE
Word to word translation of உயிர் மெய் எழுத்துக்கள் (Uyir Mei Ezhuthukkal) is Soul body letters, but we refer it here as compound consonants.
For ready reference see the table given at the end.

Medium consonants (இடயினம் idayinam) originates from larynx (குரல்வளை kuralvaLai).
Hard consonants (வல்லினம் vallinam) comes from chest (மார்பு).
Soft consonants (மெல்லினம் mellinam) comes from nose (மூக்கு Mūkku).
க(ka) and ங(nga) are born by the joining of the back of the tongue with that of palate.
ச(cha) and ஞ(nya) are born because of the joining of the middle of the tongue with that of the palate.
ட(ta) and ண(ṇa) are produced by the meeting of the tip of the tongue and that of the palate.
த(tha) and ந(ṉa) are easily born when the tip of the tongue widens and touches the junction of the root of the upper teeth and the palate.
ற(Ra) and ன(na) these two ar born when the tip of the toungue touches palate in a raised position.
ர(ra) and ழ(zha) – these two are born when the tip of the tongue touches embraces the roof of the mouth.
When the edge of the tongue having swelled and reaching the trunk of the teeth touches the palate, ல(la) is born, and when it embraces it ள(La) is born.
ப(pa) and ம(ma) are born when the lips meet.
வ(va) is born when the upper teeth and lower lip meet together.
ய(ya) is born when the air from the throat brushes against the palate.
Though the six soft consonants have their birth in the places note above, the air passing through the nose gives them shape.

PRONUNCIATION RULES
The vowels, pure consonants and compound consonants have four types of sound values-

0 = Neutral (the usual choice)
1 = Aspirated (Pronounce with aspiration; of stop sounds).
2 = Voiced (Produced with vibration of the vocal cords)
- RULE NO. 1 (word-starting rule)
When any member of Vowel or any permissible member of compound consonants occurs at the beginning of a word, it is pronounced at its zero levels of the neutral level. Members of consonants as well as members of compound consonants derived from ட்‚ ர்‚ ற்‚ ழ், ள், ல், ண் & ன் cannot occur as the first letter.

அக-1ம் (aham) - interior, மத-1ம் (madham) - religion, பாசி-1 (pāsi) - moss

பங்கு2 (pangu) - share
